PRETORIA, June 28 – Former President Nelson Mandela’s condition has stabilised, although he still remains critical, according to a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday afternoon.

“He remains critical but is now stable,” said the Presidency.

400847-nelson-mandelaPresident Jacob Zuma visited the former statesman in hospital in Pretoria where he is being treated for a recurring lung infection. He was informed by the medical team that Madiba’s condition has improved during the course of the night.

The President announced on Wednesday that he had decided to cancel his visit to Maputo, Mozambique, where he was due to attend the SADC Regional Summit on Infrastructure Investment on Thursday.

“I cancelled my visit to Mozambique today so that I can see him and confer with the doctors. He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night. The medical team continues to do a sterling job.

“We must pray for Tata’s health and wish him well. We must also continue with our work and daily activities while Madiba remains hospitalised.”

The Presidency said it was disturbed by the rumours that were being spread Madiba’s health and appealed for respect for the privacy and dignity of the former President.

The show of love for Madiba from ordinary citizens, however, has been on-going, with young and old united in showing the beloved former stateman support.

Lesego Moale, 8, told SAnews that she came to the hospital to wish Madiba well.  “I love Madiba because he fought for the country,” she said.

In her hand, Lesego was holding a piece of paper with the message, ‘Get well Madiba’.
