KUALA TERENGGANU, July 4- Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said the Barisan Nasional (BN) was confident of retaining the Kuala Besut state seat in the forthcoming by-election as the constituency was a BN stronghold.
He said he was confident that the constituents would continue to back the BN and the coalition expected to win by a bigger majority.
The seat fell vacant after assemblyman Dr A Rahman Mokhtar died of lung cancer last month. He had won the seat in the 13th general election by beating Napisah Ismail of PAS by 2,434 votes.
The BN candidate for the seat would be decided by the BN top leadership, Ahmad told reporters after chairing the weekly meeting of the state executive council at Wisma Darul Iman here.
The Election Commission is to meet on Friday to set the dates for nomination and polling in the by-election.
Meanwhile, in PULAU PERHENTIAN, Bukit Aman Logistics Department director Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the police were prepared for the by-election in terms of logistics and personnel.
He said the Terengganu contingent would be getting assistance from other states in terms of manpower and transportation resources to ensure a smooth by-election.
The department would also make available boats as a ballot box had to be brought across from Pulau Perhentian, he told reporters after a community programme.
