KUALA BESUT, July 9- The Kuala Besut by-election in Terengganu on July 24 falls during the fasting month of Ramadan, the same as the Kuala Besut by-election 34 years ago.
Coincidently, the two Kuala Besut state assemblymen, Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar and Zakaria Muda died on the same date, June 26.
Che Hamid Che Isa, 63, said the Kuala Besut by-election 34 years ago followed the death of state assemblyman Zakaria Muda on June 26, 1979.
“I am seeing a repeat of the Kuala Besut by-election 34 years ago. Zakaria Abdul Rahman of Barisan Nasional won the by-election held during Ramadan.”
On June 26, the Kuala Besut state assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar of Barisan Nasional died of lung cancer.
He beat PAS candidate Napsiah Ismail with a majority of 2,434 votes in the May 5 general election.
Zainuddin Mohd Taib, 49, said he is impatient to know the BN candidate contesting the seat and could not wait to carry out his responsibility as a voter.
He said the Kuala Besut voters would accept the candidate put up by the party leadership to champion the people’s welfare.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) slogan for the Kuala Besut by-election is ‘Kuala Besur Bertambah Biru’ (Kuala Besut Turning Bluer).
The BN has targeted an increased majority of 4,000 votes compared to the 2,434 votes received by Dr A Rahman on May 5.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will announce the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kuala Besut state by-election tomorrow.
