CHENNAI (Tamil Nadu), Aug 26 – Southern Tamil Nadu state will equip autorickshaws in capital Chennai with meters fitted with GPS and a panic button to ensure passenger safety, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said in a statement the meters would also have GPS enabled electronic digital printers for passengers to pay their ticket and receive a receipt.
“In the event anyone travelling in an autorickshaw faces some danger, they can press the panic button fitted in the meter to alert police,” she said.
Officials said the government has also announced the revision of fares for autorickshaws.
The first 1.8km will cost Rs25 (US$0.39) and Rs12 (US$0.19) for every additional kilometre.
Autorickshaws are one of the popular modes of local transport in Chennai with more than 71,000 plying in the city.
