KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 – The police want national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said to surrender himself to help in the probe into an incident of waving a flag other than the Malaysian flag on the eve of National Day here last Friday.
“It is better for him to surrender than for us to arrest him. We assume that if he is bold enough to challenge the law, he must be bold enough to come forward,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
Khalid spoke to reporters after attending the passing-out parade and commissioning of the ninth Police Undergraduates Volunteer Corps (Suksis) of public tertiary institutions, here, Tuesday.
He said Samad was one of three individuals reportedly seen in the incident.
The others, pro-opposition activists Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Hishamuddin Rais, were arrested by police yesterday in Kampung Baru and taken to the Dang Wangi District Police headquarters.
Khalid said the investigation of the case might be not just under the Sedition Act 1948 but also under provisions of the law pertaining to the national flag and national anthem.
“They (Adam Adli and Hishamuddin) are being questioned,” he said.
During the celebration on the eve of National Day, a group of pro-opposition activists were reportedly seen waving a flag other than the Malaysian flag at Dataran Merdeka.
A video recording of the incident was uploaded onto the social media network.
