“It is my hope that more Malaysians will reflect on our shared history, whereby the two Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak together with the Federation of Malaya helped form a new country,” he said at the unveiling of the logo on MASwings’ new ATR72-600 and Twin Otter DHC6-400 aircraft at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport here Thursday.

Musa said Malaysia Day, which falls on September 16, was a historic occasion that brought together the people of Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsular.

“In the last five decades, we have overcome many challenges and seen transformations in many sectors. The aviation sector too has gone through phases of growth and today, air travel has become a lot more accessible with the introduction of community and budget airlines,” he said in his speech delivered by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

Musa said tourism was an important sector in Sabah’s economy and was featured prominently in the Sabah Development Corridor and the Federal-led Economic Transformation Programme.

“MASwings’ role is indeed very important in Sabah as part of our efforts to further promote tourism beyond Kota Kinabalu,” he said.

MASwings Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Nawawi Awang said the specially designed 50th Malaysia Day logo with the Jalur Gemilang featured within the number “0” plus the salutation ‘Tahniah Sabah dan Sarawak’ (Congratulations Sabah and Sarawak) was painted on the two new MASwings’ aircraft for operations within Sabah and Sarawak.

“This is a historic celebration for the whole nation and our way (displaying logo on the aircraft) to congratulate the people of Sabah and Sarawak for their significant development and economic growth,” he said.

He also said MASwings would be launching a special airfare promotion called “Everyday Low Fare” on all domestic routes on September 16.

“This is the very first time that MASwings has come up with a very special fare with up to 80 per cent discount being offered dedicated especially to all our valuable customers,” he said.

Mohd Nawawi said booking period for the promotion would be on Sept 16 to Dec 17, 2013 for travel period from Oct 1 to Dec 31, 2013.
