Kuala Lumpur, Dec 2 – Undergraduates need to improve their English language proficiency, which is an important element in having better employment opportunities, as English is a global language.
The prime minister’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said it was very worrying if graduates obtained their degrees with excellent results, yet they failed to compete successfully in the job market due to their poor command of English.
“Such graduates are regarded as less suitable in the international job market and this problem is more pronounced among the Malay graduates,” she said at a dinner with participants of the National Graduates Conference 2013 and members of the Umno Overseas Club, here, Sunday night.
Also present were Communications and Multimedia Minister and Umno Overseas Club chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Depty Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also the Umno Higher Learning Institution Bureau chairman.
Rosmah said undergraduates should also acquire as much knowledge, skills and experience as possible while at university so that they would develop into excellent and highly competitive individuals.
She said the learning process at university was aimed at building resilience in preparing for their struggle for the nation, people and religion, and also in meeting future challenges.
She also advised undergraduates to be active in community work which was seen to be increasingly lacking among them.
“Organise activities that are beneficial for the community as they will highly appreciate the efforts taken by intelligent, educated people to assist them,” she said.
Rosmah said voluntary activities could also train undergraduates in developing leadership, communication skills, decision making, and in being good workers.
