George Town, Jan 3 – Penang police will be mobilising 1,000 officers and men to ensure the safety and security of the public in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration from Jan 16-18.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said some 1.5 people including Hindus from neighbouring countries and tourists were expected to descend on the venues of the celebration in the state.
“We advise the people to be on their best behavior. We will come down hard on individuals or groups who resort to misconduct like getting drunk, bring sharp weapons or cause disturbances,” he told reporters here today.
He added that there would also be temporary road closures in conjunction with the celebration and advise the public to opt for public transport to reduce congestion.
