New Delhi, Jan 6 – It was the last day of the year 2013 and Pope Francis had a vexing problem on his hands. He was trying to get in touch with a group of Spanish nuns to wish them a happy new year, but no one was answering the phone.
The Barefoot Carmelite nuns from Luceana in Southern Spain were so busy with their midday prayers that they didn’t hear the phone. So the Pope ended up doing the next most logical thing: he left them a cheeky voicemail.
In the voicemail, the Pope said, “What can the nuns be doing that stops them from answering the phone?”
He continued, “This is Pope Francis. I wanted to give you New Year’s greetings. Maybe I’ll try to call again later. May God bless you.”
The recording was obtained by Spain’s El Mundo newspaper and was later broadcast on Italian radio over the weekend.
Understandably enough, the prioress of the convent, Sister Adrianna, was mortified when she found the message later.
“When my duties allowed me to go to the phone, I literally wanted to die,” she told a local radio channel.
“I took down the message and passed it to the other nuns. We told ourselves we had just been fulfilling our duty of prayer. We never thought the Pope would remember us.”
But Pope Francis called back later in the evening and managed to talk to the nuns. And everyone was very happy in the end.
