GEORGE TOWN, 20 April — Leaders, friends and ordinary people turned up in droves to pay their final respects to DAP leader Karpal Singh Ram Singh at his residence in Jalan Utama here yesterday.
Among them, Kelantan Menteri Besar Kelantan Datuk Ahmad Yakob, when met, described Karpal as leader had championed the people and sought justice for them.
“On behalf of the Kelantan government, I am saddened by his tragic death,” he said.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said Karpal’s death was a profound loss to the country.
Describing Karpal as a committed and dedicated lawyer, he said, “I was told that case files on Anwar (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which were to be brought to the Federal Court, were found in the ill-fated MPV. We will continue his struggle.”
Real estate agent Wilson Moorthy, 47, said he had great admiration for Karpal since he was 18 after seeing him debating in Parliament.
“Although I had wanted to meet him for a long time, it was not until I moved to Penang at the age of 24 that I was able to do that. I had always assisted him during election campaigns,” he added.
He said Karpal had always reminded him to help people with honesty and sincerity without expecting anything in return and not to give up easily.
Karpal Singh died in a road accident at Km306.1 of the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Kampar at 1.10 am on Thursday. He was 74.
Also killed in the MPV-lorry accident was Karpal Singh’s personal assistant Michael Cornelius, 39.
