Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in a statement today said they were arrested in an operation by Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division yesterday.

The first suspect, a holder of the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) card, is said to be an explosives expert, while the second suspect, is linked to a murder attempt on former Sri Lankan president Chandirka Kumaratunga on Dec 18, 1999.

The third accused is alleged to have facilitated the planned attacks on Sri Lankan consulates in Chennai and Bangalore, India and is also implicated in nefarious activities related to fraudulent travel documents, foreign student pass and human smuggling.

The fourth is accused of gathering intelligence for the LTTE.

He said forged passports and other documents were confiscated during the raid.

Some activists had exploited their status as refugees to pursue illegal activities, he added.
