Parties contesting in Pengkalan Kubor by-election told to obey the law

TUMPAT, September 24- Political parties contesting in tomorrow’s Pengkalan Kubor by-election have been told to abide by the law and election regulations and to stop their campaign at midnight today.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said they should observe the stipulated laws and regulations to ensure a smooth, peaceful and calm election process tomorrow.

He said the campaign for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election should cease at midnight today.”If there are parties still stubborn, we will demolish the structures at their campaign site with the cooperation of the local authorities,” he told a media conference here Wednesday.

He said 435 election workers would be on duty to ensure a smooth election process.Abdul Aziz advised voters to check their voter registration details before going to the polls.
He said 11 polling centres with 45 polling streams would be opened from 8 am until 5 pm for tomorrow’s polling.

It involves 11 schools, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Kubor 1, Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Kubor 2, Sekolah Menengah Ugama (A) Meheliah Geting, Sekolah Kebangsaan Geting (1), Sekolah Kebangsaan Simpangan, Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Tumpat, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bunohan, Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Neting, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bendang Pa’ Yong, Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Jering and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Geting.

There are 24,039 voters in the Pengkalan Kubor constituency, comprising 23,929 ordinary voters, 109 advance voters and an absentee or overseas voter.The Pengkalan Kubor by-election is called following the death of three-term assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar from liver cancer last Aug 20.

The by-election is a three-cornered contest among Mat Razi Mat Ail of Barisan Nasional, PAS candidate Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

Noor Zahidi had retained the seat in the general election held last year with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and Izat Bukhary.
