New Delhi, October 7 – Flipkart said that it sold goods worth $100 million in 10 hours after it kicked off the Big Billion Day shopping fest from 8am on Monday. The impressive number were notched up despite the glitches on the Flipkart site due to huge rush as well as counter-offers by other retail companies like Snapdeal and Amazon India.
“The Big Billion Day is an unprecedented day for us as this is the biggest sale ever in India. We are delighted by the overwhelming response from our customers since 8 am today.
With a range of exciting offers on quality products at disruptive prices available throughout the sale period, we have created history in Indian e-commerce,” Flipkart founder Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal said in a statement.
“Our teams and sellers worked days and nights to make this sale a success – and our efforts paid off. We got a billion hits on our site today and achieved our 24 hour sales target of $100mn in GMV in just 10 hours,” they added.
While Flipkart is saying that it met its target, it is also true that Monday was a rough day for the company. After the sale started in morning, consumers complained of errors on the website as they tried to purchase items. The problems were so widespread that frustrated consumers took to Twitter and made hashtag #Flopkart trend.
On the other hand, Snapdeal and Amazon India launched their own festive offer deals and in many cases not only matched the price Flipkart was offering but also exceeded them. Amazon India even acquired the control of a domain calledbigbillionday.com and redirected it to the Amazon India store to score some brownie points.
