Samsung Galaxy J1New Delhi, December 23 – As the competition has heated up in the low-end of the smartphone market, Samsung’s products have struggled to compete. That said, Samsung is already working hard at improving its products with new offerings like the Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Note 4 and the new Galaxy A range.

According to a report by SamMobile, a blog dedicated to covering Samsung’s mobile products, the South Korean manufacturer is prepping the Galaxy J1 smartphone. This phone is expected to offer an 64-bit chip and 4G LTE connectivity in a package that will compete in the entry-level segment.

Reportedly, a 64-bit Marvel PXA1908 CPU with a clock speed of 1.2GHz will power the phone. The phone will be rather diminutive at 4.3-inches. Its screen resolution is expected to be WVGA at 800×480 pixels.

Other features of the phone include a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, 1GB RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a 1,850mAh battery. The phone will reportedly run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, but will be upgradable to Android Lollipop.

At the low-end of the market, Samsung is rather cornered. It struggles to compete on counts of built quality, software and feature set. It faces stiff competition from a new breed of Chinese and India smartphone manufacturers.

India is a good example of Samsung’s struggles. Local vendor, Micromax has cannibalised a lot of Samsung’s market. It has quickly risen to become the number smartphone brand in the country mostly at the expense of the South Korean giant.

In addition, the entry of Chinese brands like Motorola (Lenovo owned), Xiaomi and OnePlus have left its products grossly outclassed in terms of functionality. Now many brands like Lenovo and Huawei are replicating the models introduced by Xiaomi in India.

Mostly, these are online only model. Micromax itself has launched a new subsidiary called Yu, which will start selling the Yureka smartphone via Amazon in January and it also offers features found in phones costing as much as three times its price.
