Washington (dpa) – Samsung, already under fire for its flammable smartphone Galaxy Note 7, will recall 2.8 million washing machines in the United States after reports of injuries resulting from extreme vibration, US authorities announced Friday.
“The washing machine top can unexpectedly detach from the washing machine chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact,” a statement from the US consumer safety authority CPSC says.
The recall affects 34 top-loading models produced between March 2011 and April 2016.
The South Korean electronics colossus has received 733 reports of the washing machines vibrating violently or falling apart while in use. There are nine reports of injuries resulting from the defect, including a broken jaw.
US authorities opened an investigation on the machines’s safety in September. In 2013, Samsung recalled a number of top-loading models due to fire issues.
The company said that the machines affected in the current recall are limited to North America.
