Kuala Lumpur, February 14 – Hitherto termed as quiet and unassuming, MIC Deputy President and Health Minister Dato Seri Dr S.Subramaniam has fired his salvo in his presidential campaign by chairing a CWC (Central Working Committee) meeting comprising those CWC members elected in 2009.
The meeting, termed as emergency CWC meeting was quickly called by A.Sakthivel, an elected CWC member who was also the Secretary General then. Subra was invited to chair the meeting.
The CWC meeting of 2009 elected members held yesterday
MIC observers are of the view, with this move Subra has taken the lead in the party’s presidential campaign and is poised gather momentum of support in the coming days.
Subra first displayed his leadership mettle when he chaired a meeting more than 80 division leaders in Kuala Lumpur which declared support for him to lead and solve the MIC crisis.
For the last one month despite his heavy ministerial responsibilities and pressures exerted by party’s internal squabbles, Subra was busy organizing his elder daughter’s wedding which was held on the 2nd of February 2015.
A grand lunch reception was held on the 7th of February which was attended by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister together with more than 2,000 guests.
Sources close to Subra said immediately the next day he flew to overseas with his newly wedded daughter and was back in action yesterday morning.
In between, although he was not in town, with the help of his supporters he had been putting in line a series of measures to prepare himself to take on Palanivel.
By inviting the RoS officials to attend the meeting yesterday Subra has legalised the meeting and shown the MIC branch chairmen that he has the mettle to take on Palanivel and lead the party.
Palanivel alleged that the CWC meeting yesterday was illegal and sms messages were sent to the branch chairmen explaining why the meeting is illegal.
However, the meeting was held in MIC headquarters itself and was chaired by Subra, witnessed by RoS officials.
Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, Subra will be heading to HGS Convention Centre in Sentul to officially announce his candidature in the presence of 2,000 branch chairmen who are expected to gather to show their support for him.
With that announcement expected tomorrow the stage is set for MIC to elect their next President and it will be the first major Presidential battle in 26 years. The last major Presidential election was in 1989 when Tan Sri Subramaniam (then Deputy President of MIC) took on Samy Vellu for Presidency.
