KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar has been detained under the Sedition Act to facilitate police investigations into the #KitaLawan rally in the city.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said she was also investigated under the same act for making contemptuous remarks on the judiciary, claiming that the system had “sold their souls to the devil”.
“She will be released once her statement has been recorded,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Nurul Izzah was detained at the Dang Wangi police headquarters here at 3.55pm yesterday.
In her speech at the Dewan Rakyat sitting on March 10, she was reported to have accused the judges of “bowing to political masters”, and calling them “partners in a crime that contributed to the death of a free judiciary”.
Meanwhile, in his Twitter @KBAP51 today, Khalid said police would call the Petaling Jaya Utara Member of Parliament Tony Phua on the status he uploaded in the Twitter page @tonypua which mentioned “Bastards. Real Bastards. Royal my foot” related to the action of the police in detaining Nurul Izzah this evening.
“Police will call this YB to clarify what he meant by ‘Royal my foot’. Is it aimed at the Malay Rulers?,” said Khalid in his twit.
Phua, however, edited his twit by only mentioning “bastards”.
