twitterNew Delhi, April 18 – After making strong guidelines to stop nudity, popular micro-blogging site Twitter has started overhauling its safety policy to stop abusive and hateful tweets. The move is seen as a first step to discourage any communal hatred.

As per the new policy the tweets and other related content that shows crossing the red line of freedom of speech will be dealt accordingly. The company in a move to bring more transparency in its system is all set to curtail the use of anonymity or unknown Twitter accounts created with an aim to intimidate or threaten people.

AFP cited a report in Washington Post by general counsel Vijaya Gadde which said that Twitter besides beefing up the team responsible for enforcing it has started heavily investing in ways to detect and limit the reach of abusive content. “We are changing our approach to this problem, in some ways that won’t be readily apparent and in others that will be,” Gadde has said.

He added that there was a need to do a better job combating abuse without “chilling or silencing speech”. Last month, Twitter updated its laws and has banned any kind of ‘revenge porn’ or the intimate tweets that reveal pictures or video of people without their consent.

According to Gadde some Twitter users have experienced firsthand abuse of various types which has gone unchecked because of the policies due to which product couldn’t appropriately recognise the scope and extent of harm inflicted by abusive behavior.
