KUALA LUMPUR: The Special Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) Committee today submitted an interim report to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a feedback on the progress of the committee’s review to date.

The committee, in a statement today, said the interim report consisted of recommendations that were formed as a first step in the process of improving electoral systems and laws.

“As a follow up step, the ERC will take further action to prepare a full report which will be submitted to the Prime Minister by August at the latest.

“The ERC has also carried out tasks in accordance with the mandate given to study electoral systems and laws, including making comparisons with developed democratic countries,” the statement said.

The statement added that in order to obtain public recommendations and views, 21 engagement sessions were held nationwide over the last 16 months, where the committee also received views and input in the form of written memorandum from various parties.

ERC was established by the government in August 2018 to study the existing electoral system and laws.

The main task of the ERC is to provide suggestions and recommendations to ensure that the general elections in Malaysia are carried out properly, in accordance with the standards achieved by developed democratic countries and to obtain full public trust.

The ERC has been conducting intensive research since its inception with a focus on 15 specific components of study based on the objective of achieving a perfect electoral democracy.
