JERLUN, March 8 – Twenty-nine PAS members and supporters in Kubang Menerung Dalam, Padang Sera, near here, have joined Umno, according to Jerlun Member of Parliament Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir.
They handed in their application forms to Mukhriz through a representative, Ahmad Adam, 50, at a ‘ceramah’ (talk) in Padang Sera last night. Muhkriz, who is Kedah Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman, said the former PAS members and supporters felt that Umno, and not PAS, championed Islam.
He told reporters they were disappointed that PAS had not adopted a firm stand on the issue of allowing the word “Allah” to be used in the Malay version of the Bible and that the party was supportive of the DAP. Mukhriz, who is deputy international trade and industry minister, said about 100 members and supporters of PAS in the Jerlun parliamentary constituency had joined Umno and would help the party in the 13th general election.
