George Town – Penang Deputy Chief Minister Prof Dr P.Ramasamy has slammed the Home Ministry’s proposal to recruit former Sri Lankan soldiers as Security Guards in Malaysia.
The following is his facebook posting today:
“Apparently there is hue and cry amongst the security agencies in the country about the rise in crimes and the non-availability of trained and professional security guards. Nepalese who have been recruited earlier to work in security related jobs have not shown much interest in coming to Malaysia. The recent proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs to recruit former Sri Lankan soldiers to work as security guards in the country has been welcomed by the Crime Prevention Network Association (NPNA). Its President Alex Chandran Krishnan said that such a move would contribute to filling up the vacant posts and at the same contribute to the professionalism of the security guards.
Since the former soldiers would have received extensive training and battle-field experiences, they would be in a position to contribute to the meaningful development of security agencies in the country.
If the Ministry of Home Affairs finalizes this move, then the former Sri Lankan soldiers coming into Malaysia would be screened to ensure that remnants of the LTTE would be weeded out.
Chandran Krishnan’s endorsement of this move leaves much to be desired.
While agreeing that vacancies need to be filled up in security services, bringing in former Sri Lankan soldiers, invariably, Sinhalese, into the country might have undesirable effects.
Krishnan apparently stated that former LTTE members would be weeded out, but then question is how many of them are in the armed forces.
While some former LTTE cadres might have joined the Sri Lankan armed forces, however, before the end of the war in 2009, there were hardly any Tamils in the armed forces.
I don’t understand as to where Chandran Krishnan is getting his information, perhaps he has no knowledge of matters concerning Sri Lanka.
There is global hue and cry that what happened in the final stages of the war in the north and east of Sri Lankan, Tamil areas, was an ethnic genocide, where hundreds and thousands of innocent Tamils were killed.
Moreover thousands of women were raped and sexually abused by the Sri Lankan armed forces.
There many reports from the human rights organizations on the mistreatment of Tamil women by the Sri Lankan armed forces during and after the ethnic war.
Is Chandran Krishan suggesting that we condone the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces?
Not a single soldier has been brought to trial l for their involvement in the crimes against humanity, I mean,Tamils.
Chandran Krishnan, being a Tamil, is more insensitive to the suffering and denigrations suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Many of the former soldiers of the Sri Lankan armed forces have been involved in crimes against humanity.
Presently, the UN Human Rights Council is urging that Sri Lanka open itself for international investigation for crimes against Tamils.
If the Malaysian government recruits former soldiers of the Sri Lankan armed forces, then Malaysia would be guilty of condoning the terrible crimes against Tamils.
I can assure you that Tamils in Malaysia would not sit back and look at this recruitment passively.
I hope that Malaysian government would rescind such a move as it would be grave insult to the dignity and well-being of Tamils in Sri Lankan and Malaysia.
Chandran Krishnan should not think of just making extra bucks from the misery of Tamils!
He should be sensitive to the concerns of Tamils in Malaysia at the least.”
