Wellington  – The dwindling New Zealand Post is branching out: On top of delivering letters and parcels to homes it now also serves fried chicken for dinner.

US fast food chain KFC has partnered with the 170-year-old postal service to deliver their chicken dishes in a trial in the North Island city of Tauranga, local media reported on Tuesday.

The chief executive of KFC parent company Restaurant Brands, Ian Letele, said that the decision to join forces with NZ Post was due to their expertise in logistics, the New Zealand Herald reported.

“NZ Post has an extensive delivery distribution network around New Zealand, and KFC is available in most towns nationwide. With the support of NZ Post, we hope to service the home delivery needs of many more KFC customers throughout New Zealand,” Letele said.

The move is part of NZ Post’s struggle to survive in a changing world.

“All post offices around the world are struggling with what to do when mail disappears. We want to survive for another 100 years, but we urgently need to diversify our business,” NZ Post spokesman Mike Stewart told the Guardian.

The number of letters sent in New Zealand has halved in the last decade and postal delivery has been reduced to three days a week to save costs.

“People want their goods on-demand delivered to their home in 30 to 60 minutes. That seems to be where the world is going,” he said.

“It is an exciting time for us.”
