KANGAR, April 2- The opposition is now clamouring for public attention through government projects and programmes, claiming the benefits enjoyed by the people were the result of their struggles, said Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu. He said the desperate move was an attempt to reel in voters for the coming general election and he hoped the public would not fall for such tactics.
Speaking at the presentation of aid under the Urban Poverty Eradication Programme in Simpang Empat, near here, last night, he said it was the Barisan Nasional (BN) government that brought development to Perlis. Md Isa said the government had implemented various development projects and programmes to continuously improve the lives of the people.
“They (opposition) claim that these beneficial projects are a result of their hard work,” he said.
Earlier, Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) president Rosley Mat, in his speech, said the opposition had rejected development in Kangar including a proposal to relocate the Kangar main market to Kampung Sena several years ago. He said they criticised the MPK for deciding to move the market, saying it would affect the traders’ livelihoods but the opposition then changed their statement when the traders proved to earn more in the new location.
They publicly claimed that they had fought for the market’s relocation to help traders earn more, he added. At the event, 151 urban residents received contributions amounting to RM1.2 million. Of the number, 84 were given aid for rental for a year, 48 for house repair and construction and 19 for their business kiosk.
