CARACAS, April 4- Venezuela’s acting President Nicolas Maduro asked his supporters at an election rally Wednesday to continue following the legacy of their late leader Hugo Chavez, who died less than a month ago. During the second day of his campaign swing through Venezuela, Maduro addressed a sea of red-dressed followers at a rally in San Cristobal, the capital of southwest Tachira state, where Chavez’s image and message were present among the crowd.
Maduro pledged to lead “a government of the street, committed to daily work with the people.”
“That’s my plan, Chavez’s plan, the country’s plan, the people’ s plan, the plan of our children’s future,” he added. On Tuesday, Chavez’s chosen successor embarked on a campaign trail that will take him to each of Venezuela’s 24 states before the campaign period ends at midnight on April 11, three days before the presidential elections.
Maduro began his national tour by making campaign stops in Barinas and Zulia states. On Wednesday, he was to travel next to Merida, and on Thursday, the candidate of Venezuela’s United Socialist Party will visit Aragua state before heading back to the capital Caracas in the afternoon.
Next Saturday, Maduro is scheduled to visit the states of Amazonas, Delta Amacuro and Bolivar, and on Sunday, Apure, Portuguesa and Guarico. He will continue his campaign next Monday in Monagas, Anzoategui, Sucre and Nueva Esparta, then head Tuesday to Vargas and Miranda, and on April 10, he will travel to Trujillo, Falcon and Lara.
Maduro will end his campaign April 11 back in Zulia, on its eastern coast, and then in Caracas’ main Bolivar Avenue, marking the anniversary of the 2002 failed coup against Chavez.
