Kuala Lumpur: Odissi is a renowned traditional dance form originating from the Indian state of Odisha (formerly Orissa).
Guru Dr. Gajendra Panda, a celebrated Odissi dancer from India, is currently visiting Malaysia. He is well-known for his expertise in Odissi and has conducted extensive research on the origins of this dance form. With 50 years of experience in the field, he is now celebrating the 50th anniversary of his dance career. As part of a series of events organized by the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to commemorate Indian Independence Day, he will present special Odissi dance performances along with his students for Malaysian dance enthusiasts and fans.
Information about these dance performances was shared at a press conference held on Tuesday, August 13, at the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Center in Brickfields. Guru Dr. Gajendra Panda, Her Excellency Subashini Narayanan, the Deputy High Commissioner of India, and Vijayalakshmi Sundarajan, the Director of the Indian Cultural Centre, participated and provided details about the event. Gajendra Panda said he chose Malaysia as the venue to his troupe’s dance performances and to celebrate his 50th year dance career, because of his long standing cultural relationship with Malaysia since 1982.
The first phase of these dance performances took place on August 12 in Sungai Siput. The subsequent performances are scheduled as follows:
