KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1- Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said Members of Parliament must work hand-in-hand with the police to tackle serious crimes.

He said killings using firearms lately was seen as challenging to the police and as such, a campaign must be conducted to combat them so that criminals would realise they were hated by all.

2012 Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim“Crimes must be jointly fought. Don’t wait until the crime is at our door step,” he told a media conference at the Parliament lobby here Wednesday.

According to Shahidan, all quarters regardless of political background must play their role because criminals seemed to be unafraid of the existing laws.

“Tomorrow, I will hold a campaign to combat crime starting with members of Dewan Negara (the Senate) so that they (senators) too can play a role,” he said

Meanwhile, several members of the Dewan Negara urged the government to speed up the implementation of additional provisions in the law, following the incidents of killing using firearms.

Senator Datuk Noriah Mahat said the initiative voiced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak proved that the government was always concerned by taking several necessary actions in overcoming such cases.

“The government must boost surveillance at entry points into the country and hardcore criminals who are repeatedly arrested should not be freed for the sake of national security,” Noriah said.

Senator Roslin Abdul Rahman said criminals were now getting braver after the Internal Security Act was abolished last year.

“Efforts must be strengthened to combat crimes especially serious crimes,” said Roslin.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister said a sub-committee, manned by several ministers including Home Minister and a Minister in Prime Minister’s Department had been set up to decide on additional provisions in the law to strengthen the jurisdiction of the police.
