Muhyiddin said he was happy with the outcome of his meeting with industry leaders over the past two days, especially representatives from the University of Reading and a number of universities in the UK who took part in a positive way by contributing positive views and ideas towards the government’s initiative to launch the blueprint.

“They were amazed with the blueprint and congratulated the Malaysian government for taking such a huge initiative and they felt it will provide huge benefits to universities because students who come through the system will have quality when they enter universities for higher education,” he told Malaysian reporters on the fourth day of his five-day working visit to the UK, at the Malaysian High Commissioner’s office, here, today.

The blueprint which was drawn up with precision and care, with contributions from international and local educational experts, was launched by Muhyiddin last Friday and aimed at transforming the education system in the country.

Muhyiddin had said among the areas emphasized in the blueprint were teachers, school leaders, school quality, curriculum and assessment, command of multiple languages, post-secondary education opportunities, parents and communities, resource efficiency and effectiveness, as well as the education delivery system.

He said the first wave of the blueprint’s success would be seen through the results achieved by students at the end of the year and that would provide a catalyst for the government to assess the system’s strength and weakness.

“To witness the true impact of the blueprint through the first wave may not be an easy task but in the following years, its effectiveness can be seen clearly,” he said.

He also said 70,000 English teachers have sat the Cambridge Placement Test, while another 5,000 have completed their training to improve language proficiency.

On Sept 11 last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had launched the early report of the Malaysia Education Blueprint, which focuses on six attributes — knowledge, thinking skills, leadership, bilingual proficiency, ethics and national identity — which can be achieved through different approaches, depending on each student’s standards and capabilities.

He said as an immediate step, 5,000 English language teachers were sent for training to improve their language proficiency while the second batch would involve 9,000 teachers from the targeted 60,000 would be send for a similar training.
