manmohan-singhNEW DELHI, March 20  — India said it will not support any unilateral measures after several countries imposed sanctions on Russia over its annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, Press Trust of India (PTI)
reported.

“India has never supported unilateral sanctions against any country be it Iraq or Iran; we will not support any unilateral measures by a country or a group of countries,” government sources said Wednesday.

The comments came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin explained the situation to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (pic), who underlined India’s position on “unity and territorial integrity” of countries and hoped a
diplomatic solution to the issue would be reached.

The US and the EU have imposed sanctions on a number of officials from Russia and Ukraine, who were accused of involvement in Moscow’s actions in the Black Sea peninsula.

Australia has also announced its decision to impose financial and travel sanctions on a dozen political figures from the region.

Putin signed a treaty on Tuesday recognising Crimea as part of Russia, pressing ahead with an annexation that Washington and Ukraine’s new government said is illegal.

A referendum on Sunday showed more than 95 percent of Crimea voters chose to join Russia.
