New Delhi, April 3 – There are Android fans, and there are iOS fans; the war of words between the two is a long unsettling one. There’s no doubt that both these operating systems are downright awesome in their own right, we love them for what they are and what they offer.
We love the functionality and ease of use that Android offers and the style and sophistication that Apple’s iOS brings to the table. Every now and then we are asked to narrow it down to which OS is better, or more precisely which one beats the other. Earlier, we gave you some insight into how Android phones outsmart the iPhone on more than one count.
While we are not here to judge them, per say; since we love them both so very much, there are a few important traits that distinguish one from the other, which is obvious since both come from two very different makers. Today we bring to you 10 things that only an iPhone can do and Android, well, not really. Read on…
iMessage:
iMessage is essentially an instant messenger for Apple devices: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. It’s seamlessly integrated along with the general messaging app and can be used to text other people having Apple devices.
The service lets you send stuff over Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G or LTE, making it a handy sms/mms alternative. Moreover, you can also send documents, photos, videos, contact information, and group messages via iMessage. It’s a handy alternative to say,
WhatsApp on an Apple device, and has an edge over it as it can also be used simultaneously on more than one Apple device. You can keep the conversation going across all of them, which is nice.
FaceTime:
Apple also gives you an in-house way to make video-calls to other Apple devices. FaceTime is essentially a service that lets you make video calls between two Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac etc. The fact that you can make use of both rear and front cameras at the same time while making video calls via FaceTime makes it all the more interesting.
Access to iTunes:
iTunes is not just an Apple Store, it’s so much more. It’s a music player, music and video streamer, and a live podcast. Google’s Play Store is what you call a more traditional app store, only recently books and movies were added to it.
Simplicity:
There’s no doubt that Android gives you loads of customisation options, but there’s a saying too much of everything is not very healthy either. So, while Android users can merry all they want with all their fancy launchers and widgets, there’s a thing as ‘consistency’ that only iOS can offer.
Let’s put it this way, in case someone known to you gets stuck somewhere while using his/her Android smartphone and wants to get out of the situation, and they ask for your help. What if he/she is using a launcher you don’t know about, or a widget that you’ve never sued before?
Of course you can always change the launcher from settings back to default, but you’ll have to tech savy for that, and let’s be honest not everyone is. iOS on the other hand is consistent in this aspect, meaning it’s same across every iPhone. So if someone gets stuck somewhere, and you happen to use an iPhone too you can very well guide him/her through the situation.
Always updated version:
Unlike Android, Apple updates usually reach your iPhone immediately as and when they come out. There’s no delay. Once Apple pushes out a new OS version or an updated to an existing one, you get it out for your device.
Android updates on the other hand take timed depending upon your wireless career. Also the fact that most OEMs skin Android OS so heavily that there’s more delay in receiving a new update in this regard.
One of the best things about the iPhone, and other iOS devices, is that Apple usually makes software updates available almost immediately after they’re announced, and its users and can install without delay.
Apple Pay:
Although not available in India yet, Apple’s Pay mobile payment service lets you make payments using the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3.
Siri:
Apple’s Siri needs no introduction. Apple’s very own virtual assistant lets users ask questions, set up appointments and reminders among others.
No bloatware:
Let’s face it, iPhones do come with their own share of bloatware, but the undisputed king of unnecessary bloatwares is Android. There’s simply so much of it on the platter sometimes that it becomes frustrating for users.
While the number of these unneeded apps may vary from one OEM to another, their sheer volume still remains larger than what you get on an iPhone. Moreover, not all of Google’s own pre-loaded apps are that very useful, in fact most of us don’t even use it at all in our life time.
The fact that most of these apps can’t be uninstalled adds to users’ woes. At the same time it eats up considerable space on you smartphones, which is not very healthy.
Better safety:
You may cry out of joy all you want over the freedom you get in Android, but that freedom comes at a price. Security of your Android smartphone can be breached far too easily in comparison to an iPhone, studies have shown.
It’s comparatively easy to infect an Android smartphone with malicious malware over an iPhone, letting anyone with a little technical know-how to gain remote access of your smartphone and then do all sorts of vile things with it, including robbing you if you use your phone for mobile payments.
Such incidences have been reported from across the globe. We are now saying iPhones don’t have a chink in their armor, just that they are more secure than Android phones particularly because you can’t go on and install third-party apps from unknown sources that you’ve picked up online so easily on an iPhone.
Less intrusive ads:
There are lesser intrusive ads in apps on iOS as compared to those in Android platform.
