Chennai – Kani Thamizh Sangam is organizing a conference on Tamil Typography in Chennai on the 16th and 17th of October 2015. The conference will take place at the Tamil Virtual Academy on Gandhi Mandapam Road, Kottur, Chennai.
This conference is being organised to emphasise the importance of typography and to create an awareness about it amongst Tamil users. It is hoped that this conference will be a fore-runner to many more such conferences in the years to come, and will help in systematic development of Tamil Typography.
Muthu Nedumaran is one of the Principal Speakers….
Muthu Nedumaran (pic) from Malaysia is one of the Principal speakers selected to address the conference. His involvement in Tamil Typography for the last 30 years is well known internationally and he created the popular “Murasu Anjal” Tamil software.
He has also immensely contributed towards the use of Tamil language in internet and computer softwares.
He is also the creator of Sellinam which is the Tamil input method for mobile devices. He is the founder and technology designer of selliyal.com, the only news portal from Malaysia which serves in dual languages of Tamil and English from web and mobile app platforms.
The conference’s organisers in introducing the panel of principal speakers noted Muthu Nedumaran’s contributions as follows:
“Muthu Nedumaran has over 3 decades of experience in typography. He started out by drawing large banners and posters with Tamil and Latin inscriptions while he was at school in the 70s. His initial works in the digital space were bit mapped fonts for the computer screen and dot matrix printers. Fast forward a few decades, Muthu’s type design for all of the Indic and Indo-Chinese scripts are now bundled into operating systems like Mac OS X, Windows, iOS and Android. The popular Tamil type called ‘Inaimathi’ continues to render Tamil text beautifully on iPhones, iPads, HTC Android devices and even the Apple Watches. Besides Typography Muthu has also innovated and built fast and efficient input methods for all the languages he works on in various platforms”.
About the Conference organisers….
Kani Thamizh Sangam, is a 16 year old association of Tamil Software Developers. Over the years it has worked to facilitate the growth of Tamil in Information Technology. It has been working closely with the Tamil Nadu Government and INFITT (International Forum for Information Technology in Tamil) in the evolution of Tamil encoding standards, software and Promotions.
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when drawn, printed or displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing (leading), letter-spacing (tracking), and adjusting the space within letters pairs (kerning). The term typography also is applied to the style, arrangement, and appearance of the letters, numbers, and symbols created by the process.
