SUHAKAM’s views on Orang Asli betterment to be considered -Waythamoorthy

Putra Jaya – Views and suggestions by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysian (SUHAKAM), to assist the government formulate policies for the betterment of the Orang Asli community, will be taken seriously.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department YB Senator P. Waytha Moorthy conveyed this to SUHAKAM at a meeting with Commission chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail and several other Commissioners at the Minister’s office yesterday (Wednesday, Jan 16).

SUHAKAM Commissioners present at the meeting include Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, Datuk Lok Yim Phen, Mr Francis Johen, Mr Jerald Joseph.

SUHAKAM, at the meeting, also updated the Minister on its “Report on National Inquiry into the Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”

The Commission highlighted challenges facing the Orang Asli community including customary land rights and education, and the social impact it has on the community.

YB Senator Waytha Moorthy has committed to look into all recommendations made in the report.

The meeting also discussed steps to promote national harmony, including the National Unity Consultative Council Blueprint which was released for public comment in October, last year

YB Senator Waytha Moorthy reiterated that he looked forward to SUHAKAM playing a strong role in in advocating the rights of all Malaysians, including the indigenous community.
