KUALA LUMPUR — The Education Ministry is in the final stages of finding the best mechanism for implementing free education at the university level, says its minister Maszlee Malik.
He said the ministry was working to ensure the matter was realised within the next two or three years, in line with the Pakatan Harapan government’s manifesto.
“In terms of free education, if we look at the school level, there is already no fees for the children.
“What we are talking about right now is at the university level, although there are subsidies, there is still a minimum fee that they have to pay,” he said during the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.
He was replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif (BN-Jempol) on the status of free education for students.
Meanwhile, Maszlee said the total amount deposited in the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN-i) from January to Sept this year was RM475.6 million, up from RM400.7 million within the same period last year.
Deposits into the SSPN-i Plus scheme within the same period also showed an increase, recording RM106 million this year compared to RM86 million in 2018.
