KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate earthquake registering 5.9 on the Richter scale, hit northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 1.57 pm today.
In a statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said the epicentre was 112 km south of Nias, at a depth of 61 km.
No tsunami alert was issued for Malaysia, the department said.
