Kuala Lumpur, Feb 7 – In view of the recent escalation of extremism and violence within the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) region and the massive killings and atrocities taking place against the lives of innocent civilans, the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) has stressed that Islam is a religion of compassion and peace.
It is also a religion of coexistence, moderation and respect to all fundamental human rights, including the right to life, IPHRC said in a press release made available to Bernama by the OIC
It pointed out that sabotage, indiscriminate killings, torture, mutilation, arson and others, were contrary to Islamic teachings, values and principles.
“Extremists, in whatever name, who perpetrate crimes against innocent people in any situation, should be brought to justice, so as to ensure the rule of law and avoid impunity,” the IPHRC added.
The IPHRC reiterated that no religion should be equated to violence, extremism or terrorism.
“Allah ordains in the Quran, that the killing of any innocent soul is equivalent to the killing of all mankind,” it said.
As such, the organisation urged institutions and civil society, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to strengthen their efforts in educating and raising awareness on combating extremism and violence at all levels.
