MONTEVIDEO, Feb 28 – A satellite built by Uruguayan entities will be tested in the United States to determine its capacity to enter operations.

According to the Ministry of Communication of the Presidency, the satellite will be tested in the second half of this year at the University of California.

“If controls are favourable, this would be the first Uruguayan technology in space,” said Carolina Cosse, president of the state-owned communications company Antel, who developed the device along with the University of the Republic (UdelaR).

In the project, agreed in 2012, Antel technicians and engineers and students from Faculty of Engineering worked in the laboratory prototype of the satellite, which is now almost completed. Cosse explained that this satellite prototype will allow to have “photographic and infrared information of our country, but much more important is the development of engineering technology to achieve national technology apt to be in space.”

The project includes the development of the structure, energy and communications systems, controls, launch and operation, as well as the installation of two ground stations.
