KUALA LUMPUR: The 256th meeting of the Conference of Rulers began today with the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah planting the “Cempaka Kuning” (Michelia champaca) sapling at the compound of Istana Negara to symbolise the chairing of the meeting.

The tree-planting ceremony, held for the second time, was the initiative of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. The first ceremony was held during the 255th meeting of the Conference of Rulers last year where the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Almarhum Tuanku Munawir planted a “Merbau” sapling.

The symbolic tree-planting ceremony was never held before the appointment of Al-Sultan Abdullah as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
