COMMENT BY PROF DR P.RAMASAMY,
FORMER DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER II, PENANG
The Palestinian-Israel conflict, approximately 100 years old, should not be studied or approached from a national political standpoint.
This is why many Malaysians and many others are inclined to approach this conflict from their respective countries’ political perspective.
This approach should be set aside for a more objective assessment of the Palestine-Israel conflict.
A simple understanding of the conflict, if viewed not through the lens of the major powers will reveal that the conflict stems from the seizure of land, homes and property by the state of Israel from the Palestinian people over the years.
Today the Palestinians who were once the vast majority in the present-day state of Israel have been systematically deported to regions such as the narrow-minded Gaza, the West Bank, and to countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and others.
The Balfour Declaration, the rapid emigration of Jews from Europe after the Holocaust, the stifling rift among Arab countries and then US support have led to the creation of the state of Israel.
Since then, the situation has been an ongoing war between Palestinians who have been seized of their lands with Israel and the limited support given by Arab countries.
In a series of wars after the establishment of Israel, a strong armed Israel has conquered more Arab territories than ever before.
It is so unkind and unfair to label the Palestinians as terrorists and extremists.
Violence caused by Israel is no match for the support of modern, advanced weapons. For every Israeli killed, hundreds of Palestinians including women and children were killed mercilessly.
The Gaza Peninsula is a massive prison for Palestinians with scarcity of water, food and medical supplies. In the wake of Hamas’s recent attacks, Israel’s retaliation strikes continue without a break.
Israel wants to deport Palestinians taking shelter in Gaza elsewhere. I wonder if the exodus of Palestinians again will guarantee peace and security for Israel.
Unfortunately Arab countries colluding with the US are not helping the Palestinian struggle. While the Arab people are generally sympathetic to the Palestinian struggle, their unelected representative governments, are not so sympathetic.
Disputes between Arab countries are another major source of uncertainty in helping the Palestinian struggle. Either way, Hamas may have the support of the Arab people, but they do realize that the Palestinians need to fight for their own cause.
Too much dependence on Arab countries is not working in Palestinian interests. The Palestinian people need to chart their own direction, through diplomacy and struggle or intifada.
The two-country solution offered by the Oslo Accords in the 1990s was at a loss to Palestine’s interests. The cruelty of the Jewish state is the main obstacle to offering something good or honorable to resolve this 100-year conflict.
Competition between the major powers has been the main reason preventing the resolution of the Palestinian issue.
The US is insincere in forming political solutions in Palestine’s interests. US dependence on Israel for strategic geopolitical reasons, prohibits a good solution for the Palestinian people.
Recently, Russia has proposed a two-country solution to once and for all resolve the unresolved conflict.
Would anyone be willing to accept this suggestion?
Is the US ready to reconsider a settlement of two countries that may qualitatively differ from the Oslo Agreement of the 1990s?
Unfortunately, violence is the first choice.
If their home is now bombed and destroyed, what choice do they have?
Whatever is said and done, biblical justification or not, the land that Israel occupies today is land that was forcibly taken from the Palestinian people.
While the Palestinians use violence to regain justice, Israel is using state violence on a scale never used before in the name of peace and security to keep for itself land stolen from the Palestinians.
Who, in fact, is a terrorist?
Those who want to take back stolen land from them or those who are fighting to keep their stolen land.
